So a freind has a Sapphire 7870 standard and it says it is supposed to support 4K on the HDMI.

He bought a 40 inch 4K screen to use as a stock broking setup.
No games, just a bunch of report/trending windows open.

However, 4K simply is not available in any resolution choice.

What I am missing?

He is at the latest Cat drivers, his TV: 40UN7000F is at the latest firmware.

The only question is the vid card FM.

He is running Windows 7 Pro X64...

Any ideas?

4K requires the use of a High Speed HDMI Cable, a lot of people grab any HDMI they find and do not realize the issue. That is the first thing I would check.

Here is a quote from a CNET article on 4K and cables.

The one caveat
Just because a cable is called high-speed, it doesn't mean it actually is. Some cheap HDMI cable manufacturers might just throw the label on a cable that can't actually handle the data or that can't handle the data over long distances. In this case, the cable won't work with 4K (this is true with 1080p as well, btw).

Your all not mentioning that the TV must have the new standard as well! I will be staying away from 4k TVs until this becomes the real standard. Too many current 4k TV's have the old standard inputs and only do a crappy 30hz at that resolution.

this was my issue when I bought my 4k Seiki TV. Even the HDMI cable that came with the tv didn't work. I got a new set of HDMI cables from monoprice that worked great.
